Compact x-ray microtomography system for element mapping and absorption imaging.

چکیده
We have designed and built a compact x-ray microtomography system to perform element mapping and absorption imaging by exploiting scanning fluorescence tomography and full-field transmission microtomography, respectively. It is based on a low power microfocus tube and is potentially appropriate for x-ray diagnostics in space. Full-field transmission tomography yields the three-dimensional inner structure of an object. Fluorescence microtomography provides the element distribution on a virtual section through the sample. Both techniques can be combined for appropriate samples. Microradiography as well as fluorescence mapping are also possible. For fluorescence microtomography a small and intensive microbeam is required. It is generated using a polycapillary optic. Operating the microfocus tube with a molybdenum target at 12 W, a microbeam with a full width at half maximum lateral extension of 16 microm and a flux of about 10(8) photonss is generated. As an example of application, this beam is used to determine the element distribution inside dried plant samples. For full-field scanning tomography, the x-ray optic is removed and the sample is imaged in magnifying projection onto a two-dimensional position sensitive detector. Depending on the sample size, a spatial resolution down to about 10 microm is possible in this mode. The method is demonstrated by three-dimensional imaging of a rat humerus.

Three-dimensional Mapping of Fatigue Crack Position via a Novel X-ray Phase Contrast Approach
X-ray absorption microtomography loses considerable sensitivity when it is applied to samples with high-aspect-ratio cross-sections, e.g. plates or compact tension samples. Synchrotron X-ray phase enhanced imaging is much more sensitive than absorption-based techniques to cracks with small openings, and phase imaging and stereometric techniques are developed in this paper for three-dimensional ...

X-ray absorption microtomography, a high resolution variant of medical “CT”, quantifies threedimensional microstructures efficiently and noninvasively. With this imaging modality, determination of the three-dimensional spatial distribution of crack opening as a function of applied load has helped clarify important physical processes of roughness-induced fatigue crack closure. There is a real ne...
متن کاملX-ray Microtomographic Imaging and Analysis for Basic Research
For research facilities with access to synchrotron x-ray sources, X-ray absorption microtomography (XMT) has evolved from an experimental imaging method to a specialized, if not yet routine, microscopy for imaging the 3D distribution of linear attenuation coefficients and, in some cases, elemental concentration with micron spatial resolution[1]. Recent advances in source and detector design hav...
متن کاملPhase-contrast X-ray microtomography of mouse fetus
A phase-contrast X-ray microtomography system using the Talbot imaging has been built at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. This system has much higher density resolution than absorption-based X-ray microtomography. The tomographic sections of formalin-fixed mouse fetuses obtained with this method clearly depict various organs without any staining at a pixel resolution of up to 5 µm. ...
متن کاملApplications of X-ray synchrotron microtomography for non-destructive 3D studies of paleontological specimens
Paleontologists are quite recent newcomers among the users of X-ray synchrotron imaging techniques at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Studies of the external morphological characteristics of a fossil organism are not sufficient to extract all the information for a paleontological study. Nowadays observations of internal structures become increasingly important, but these obs...
